Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2020

 Hi friends,

When I was looking for what topics to post this week, the noble prizes for the year 2020 were being announced. So, I thought of writing few posts about the Nobel prize.

Nobel prize is named after Dr.Alfred Bernhard Nobel, who was a Swedish chemist, engineer, inventor, businessman and philanthropist. I think most of us are aware of this. I will write about Sir Alfred Nobel in subsequent posts. He wrote a will stating that his property will be given as prizes for various branches, every year.

The 2020 Nobel prize in Chemistry was announced by Professor Goran K. Hansson, Secretary General of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, on 7 October 2020.

It was awarded jointly to Emmanuelle Charpentier of Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens, Berlin, Germany and Jennifer A. Doudna of University of California, Berkeley, USA for the development of a method for genome editing.

What was their discovery which made them get Nobel prize?

They have discovered one of gene technology’s sharpest tools: the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors, a tool for rewriting the code of life. Using this, the researchers can change the DNA of animals, plants or microorganisms with extremely high precision. This technology has had a revolutionary impact on the life sciences, new cancer therapies and may make the dream of curing inherited diseases come true.

We will see in detail about CRISPR/ Cas 9 in subsequent posts.
