World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) 2021
The World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is celebrated on March 21 every year. The day is celebrated to raise awareness about Down syndrome. The day was first officially observed by the United Nations in 2012.
Do you know why March 21 is chosen?
Just think..
Any guess!!!
I think most of you must have got the answer by now before you scroll down..
March 21 (third month, 21 st day) signifies the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
What is the significance of this day and how is it celebrated?
On this day, people across the world organise events and campaigns to create awareness about down syndrome. One of the most popular campaigns of this day is #LotsOfSocks.
#LotsOfSocks..
Again, sounds interesting, what is it?
Its nothing but wearing mismatched socks. It is because people may notice it and when they ask the reason, you may have the opportunity to tell them about Down syndrome and create awareness.
Cant say, sometimes it might become fashion also when we try mismatched things. Jokes apart, this is the actual reason.
What is the theme for this year?
“We CONNECT so that we can” by the United Nations.
The idea behind this theme is connection between people is most important and it helps in the worst situations. Especially during this coronavirus pandemic, people and economy have been terribly affected. So what we should remember is , even during these tough times, we should take care of those suffering from Down syndrome and also ensure that they are not left alone.
Due to different pandemic guidelines across the globe, most of the events are held online. But it has an advantage that more people are able to connect and know about the different challenges that people with Down syndrome face.
Let us try our best to connect with people and try to help whatever we can, however little it can be.
I will end this with one of my very close to heart quotes by Mother Theresa,
“Not all of us can do great things, but we can do small things with great love”
