World Blood Donor Day 2021
June 14 is celebrated as World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) throughout the world every year to spread awareness on the importance of blood donation, need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion and also to recognize the critical contribution of voluntary unpaid blood donors in saving lives.
This year WBDD is hosted by Italy in Rome.
You know why June 14 was chosen?
June 14 is the birthday of Austrian biologist and physician Karl Landsteiner who is the founder of modern blood transfusion.
The theme of WBDD 2021 is : “Give blood and keep the world beating”.
The specific objectives of this year’s campaign by WHO are to:
- thank blood donors in the world and create wider public awareness of the need for regular, unpaid blood donation
- promote the community values of blood donation in enhancing community solidarity and social cohesion
- encourage youth to embrace the humanitarian call to donate blood and inspire others to do the same
- celebrate the potential of youth as partners in promoting health.
